Whats the Best Way of Managing Your Weight During the Holiday Season

Fat Santa

Whether it’s Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Yule, avoiding weight gain during the holiday season is an impossible task for many people. From Thanksgiving through New Years, it seems like a non-stop, all-you-can-eat buffet. It is quite common for many Americans to gain twenty pounds or more during this time of the year. The result for many people is an endless cycle of spending the first nine months of the year losing weight only to regain it and more during each successive holiday time. Despite what is commonly thought, weight gain is not an inevitable part of the season. There are simple, effective steps to manage weight even during the merriest of times.

 Step 1

  1. Consume reasonable portions. There is never an acceptable reason to eat to the point of discomfort and indigestion. Eat slowly and listen for the body’s signal of fullness. Then, no matter what delicacies are left untouched, stop eating.
  2. Step 2

If it’s difficult to practice restraint with so many treats available, then load up on vegetables and fruits first thing. Not only are fruits and vegetables high in nutrients and low in calories and fat, the result of stuffing oneself with them is to become so full of such good things as to not have any room left to consume anything particularly naughty.

  3. Step 3

Desserts are to be tasted, not devoured. Eat no more than 1 or 2 tablespoons of each treat.

  4. Step 4

Drink plenty of water. While dehydration during the summer heat is commonly understood, many people do not fully appreciate the extent to which the dry, cold winter conditions can be just as depleting. Drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water every single day. It’s a vital part of staying healthy, and it helps to fill the individual such that cravings are reduced.

  5. Step 5

Avoid alcohol. Not only is alcohol a high calorie, low nutrient item; alcohol also lowers the inhibitions and can lead to excess consumption of useless calories. The truth is alcohol, in the final analysis, is the single largest contributing factor to illness, injury, and death during the holiday season
